Balancing Grief with Gratitude

“Enjoy the little things. For one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
~ Robert Brault
My Mother often told me that I came into this world as a special blessing the year I was born.
She said that I brought her and my grandmother joy in what was ironically a very difficult time for both of them that year.
My mother had four brothers. My Uncle Marty died at 19 years old, just months before my father also tragically died in a car accident. They both passed before I was born, so sadly, I never got to know either of them.
It was a terrible year for my mother and grandmother; however, they were both powerful women who managed to make it through that challenging time. Having an infant in the house was a welcome diversion from the devastating sorrow that they were both experiencing.
My mother and I lived with my three uncles, grandmother, and grandfather for my first five years.
My mother’s oldest brother, Uncle Tom (one year apart), was appointed as my Godfather, and he became my first father figure, making him special to me in many ways. A few weeks ago he passed away and his recent passing is what has brought me to write this message today.
Uncle Tom’s funeral was last week, and this Friday, I will go to the cemetery with the other family members for a military service in his honor.
Death brings on so many emotions. One being grief, which is such a strong emotion. My peace is knowing that they are all together now!
Instead of feeling sorrow and grief, I am choosing to be GRATEFUL that I had Uncle Tom, who was such an amazing man in my life from day one.
He was my rock and my one constant. I am so blessed to have had him there all these years to love, support, and guide me. I will treasure all the beautiful memories.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I wish everyone a wonderful holiday filled with much love and happiness.
Practicing gratitude can make all the difference in our happiness, health, and relationships. Make sure you are living and not just existing. Be sure to hug the ones you love, for tomorrow is not promised to any of us. Practice Gratitude!
